What to expect
The classes will be relatively small, with a maximum of 7 people on the course.
The cost of the class is £275 per person, which covers all materials and firings.- Week 1: Getting to grips with the basics of wheel-throwing. This will involve demonstrations and hands-on learning of how to centre clay on the wheel and throw cylinders.
- Weeks 2 & 3: Continuing and building on from what we’ve learnt in the first week, and moving onto throwing specific forms such as bowls or cups.
- Weeks 4 & 5: Refining. We’ll be trimming our pots, decorating with carving techniques and adding handles. We’ll then select up to 5 each to fire. Between this week and next, the finessed pots will then be dried out and bisque-fired.
- Week 6: Glazing. We’ll use brush-on glazes to decorate and finish the pots. After this class your work will be glaze fired.
You’ll be emailed when your fired work is ready to collect, which will be up to 4 weeks after the last class.
Preparing for the course- Aprons will be provided, but throwing can be messy business so wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
- The wheels are operated by pedal, so wear sensible shoes
- Long hair will need to be tied back
- Long fingernails are likely to dig into the clay, so clipped fingernails are recommended for throwing
Accessibility
Throwing can be a strenuous activity, especially when working at the wheel for periods of time. You’ll be sat at the wheel for the duration of the class, leaning over the wheel, so we encourage students to move and stretch from time to time.
If you have any injuries or medical conditions that may affect your ability on the wheel, or would like more information or have any questions, please feel free to get in touch ahead of booking.
We have a range of different sized pottery wheels, with some able to change direction, accommodating both left- and right-handed students.
Glasgow Ceramics Studio is on the ground floor of WASPS artist studios; the building and studio are wheelchair accessible. Unfortunately our wheel area isn’t wheelchair accessible, and if this would be a barrier to your learning, please get in touch as we can look at alternatives arrangements.
The studio can be noisy, especially during the throwing classes as the larger, older wheels are loud when in use, The course will be taking place in a working studio, so there’ll be ambient background sounds of studio members working.
There are separate male and female bathrooms, and a gender neutral accessible bathroom all on the ground floor, the same level as the studio.
